11/11 | A Same Date in Two Countries

November 11 used to be an unofficial festival for singletons named Singles’Day in China, then that day has evolved into a shopping festival held by some E-commerce websites (AlibabaJD.com,etc.) in recent fa1aedc8-f175-4839-a480-481e1c028b85years. From 2009, 11/11 has became a pronoun of an online shopping festival. All my Chinese friends were talking about their online shopping with a  huge discount that day and it was a pity that I could not buy anything……

At the end of 11/11, the total GMV of Taobao shopping festival was RMB 120.7 billion, it is really an amazing data for a shopping website gained on only one day.

I realized that 11/11 is also an annual festival in America named Veteran’s Day, because I saw a fantastic parade in Manhattan. This public holiday shows the honor of military veterans and celebrates the service of all American military veterans.

The date of Veteran’s Day had experienced some changes and it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11 in 1978. And it is a tradition for veterans to offer a parade on that day.

Parade almost never happened in China, and it was my first time to enjoy in a parade. I saw so many motorcycles and cars driven by veterans, and they also walked in an orderly procession or waved their hands to the audience in the float. I was also impressed by the audience along the both sides of the street, they waved their national flags and said “Thank you” to the veterans again and again, I have to say the scene there is still in my memory.

Those are the different festivals in two different countries on the same day.
