For my undergrad, I went to the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Surrounded by Yale University, the city of New Haven is full of beautiful, gothic architecture. Although Connecticut isn’t the most interesting state (it actually reminds me of Long Island) it has AMAZING food in the city of New Haven. One of the best foods is the New Haven style pizza, known as apizza by the locals. I am a huge pizza lover and I must say no pizza that I’ve ever eaten before tops New Havens. New Haven style pizza is traditionally baked in a coal-fired oven at extremely hot temperatures to give the pies a crisp, charred, chewy crust.
This style of pizza originated from the famous Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, est. 1925. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you have heard of Pepe’s before! Frank Pepe’s has historical and culinary importance, it originated in the city of New Haven. This style of pizza has thin, oblong crust, with characteristic charring and chewy texture, with combinations of melted cheeses. To read more about Pepe’s Pizza and its history click here. I also noticed on their website they even have their own blog. They must be doing something right! Pepe’s has locations in Fairfield, Manchester and Danbury, West Hartford, the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, Chestnut Hill, MA and in Yonkers, NY. The featured photo I’ve included in this post is from www.eater.com, which is a food news and dining guide from across the country. The Eater has their own post about New Haven Pizza, titled The Definitive Guide to New Haven Pizza.
Besides Pepe’s pizza, other great New Haven style apizza restaurants are BAR Pizza, Brick Oven Pizza, Sally’s Apizza, and Modern Apizza. This style of pizza tends to be drier and thinner than traditional New York style pizza, it’s a close descendent to the original Neapolitan style. This past weekend I made a visit to New Haven to see old friends and to eat some of this delicious food. If any of you ever have the opportunity to eat at Pepe’s Pizza, do not pass it up! I am also curious, have any of you heard of Pepe’s before?
Of course I’m including a picture of what I had at Pepe’s. 😛
I always get the red pie with mozzarella and bacon. It is SO delicious!
