There’s no place like home!

New York City causes a lot of trauma on the body. The overcrowded subway, the rough winter, and the constant survival mentality leaves an impression on our bodies. Every so often, it is important to return home and let our minds and bodies relax.

After 3 months of being a full time student and a full time employee, I have returned home for a few days (home is California). I came home to see family, to heal, and most importantly to remind myself why I am 3000 miles away-which is to achieve my goals.

Coming home is always humbling. It’s imperative to remind ourselves where we come from and why we are doing what we do. Being at NYIT can be overwhelming sometimes but absolutely worth it.

In my culture, it is looked down upon when a woman leaves her parents’ home before marriage. When I left to college at age 17, my father didn’t drop me off at my dorm because he was upset at my decision. Every time I would come home, my parents would beg me to move home and go to the local college. Fast forward 9 years later, and my parents still ask me to find a job nearby, to attend grad school nearby, and to build my life nearby. Coming home again this week has been no different. My father asked me to find a job nearby, he says he’ll help me buy a car if I move back home.

But New York is now home. I am constantly at war with my mind with pleasing my parents and living out my dreams. Coming home is important but it is also important to stay true to your decisions and your dreams.

I agree with you. My parents often try to convince me to move back home but I’ve realized that I am exactly where I need to be.
