Songkarn Festival : Water Festival In Thailand

Songkarn festival or water throwing festival is the most important festival in Thailand. Songkarn day’s on 13th April, which is the traditional Thai New Year. The word “Songkarn” comes from Sanskrit language that means passing or approaching.  It also know as Water Festival  as people believe that water will wash away bad luck. This festival is funny celebrating and the ceremony by Buddhism religion. Family will be appreciated in this period, people from the rural areas who are working in Bangkok  usually return home to cerebrate the festival.

For activities, there are many kind of playing. First, people go to the downtown of their city for playing throwing water and painting face by chalk powder to the others even they are stranger. This activity will make people knows each other. Second, people get merit by offering food to the monks but it is different from regularly because they are going to the temple where has many activities, such as pouring scented water with a Thai fragrance over Buddha image, building the sand pagodas and playing some Thai traditional plays.
