Doing New York – Must see museums on the Upper East Side

Welcome to the Upper East Side, farmland in the early 19th century, now one of New York City’s most affluent neighborhoods. If you plan on condensing several world-renowned museums into one day trip, there is no better place to start than on the Upper East Sides “Museum Mile.” Here, are three must-see museums on the mile; ever further down you’ll see a more comprehensive list of museums just East of  Central Park between 59th and 96th Street.

Known as the “National Academy” – the musuems collection captures the variety and vitality of American art since the early ninetenth century.

Home to an expanding collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, early modern and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year.

Better known as “The Met,” is the largest art museum in the United States, and among the most visited art museums in the world.

Museums on the mile include:

  • 110th Street – Museum for African Art
  • 105th Street – El Museo del Barrio
  • 103rd Street – Museum of the City of New York
  • 92nd Street – The Jewish Museum
  • 91st Street – Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum(part of the Smithsonian Institution)
  • 89th Street – National Academy Museumand School of Fine Arts
  • 88th Street – Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
  • 86th Street – Neue Galerie New York
  • 82nd Street – The Metropolitan Museum of Art

    Thank you for this! I definitely need to visit more museums. This city is known for the amazing museums and I feel I haven’t taken advantage as much as I could.
