When Social Media Goes Wrong

Today I watched the movie that the prof recommended us called Disconnect. I must say it’s very hard for me to write this post because I’m speechless. The movie combines three stories. the first one is about two children that thought it would be funny to pretend and be a girl online in order to emotionally bully a “weird” kid at school. The second one was about a couple that lost their first child and they are struggling. The wife is trying to get emotional comfort by using online chatting. The  problem is that the guy she is speaking to stole her and her husband’s identity. The third story is about an ambitious journalist that is trying to get a story about a cyber minor prostitution ring by using a 17 years old boy to get her story.

The movie was well directed, well written and stayed with me long after I finish watching it. The movie shows how three different stories are impacted by technology and social media. The internet changed our life dramatically, our life is better and more developed. We can find almost everything that we want online. The power of the net increased dramatically as it become more established. Therefore we must not forget the bad side of it that can be destructive on many scales. It can be used badly for bulling, abuse, violence, shaming, etc. as I saw on the movie. I witness how dreadful the use of the internet can be and the impact that it has on everyone, including the one that we love and care. We may not recognize the problems only when It hits us with awful consequences. The movie emphasizes our obsession to remain connected to the virtual world, but at the same time it can make you oblivious about what is going on in your current reality. People should be more aware of what the say online and the outcome.

Agree, I thought about it all day.

  2. This is a sad movie. Nobody benefits from the internet. Everyone is victim. But in reality, we still have some good humanity on the internet. We just don’t forget what those bad things are.
