Instagram is an Angle as well as an Devil

In the developed economics and technologies 21st century, it is hardly to live in this modern society without a smart phone. Therefore, because of smart phones shift peoples’ daily life, different kinds of applications have been built for the foundation functions of smart phones, for instance photography. Photography is not a photographer privilege in nowadays. Everyone can take fabulous pictures by using their smart phone applications, post it online and share with each other. One of the most popular application is Instagram.
Instagram is an online mobile photographic application which combines social communication with aesthetic appeal to provide a public forum for their users. Instagram enables its users to takeinstagram-iphone-app-1920 pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. A distinctive feature is that it confines photos to a square shape, similar to the image shape was taken by using Kodak Instamatic camera and Polaroid instant camera. Unlike the 4:3 aspect ratio that typically used of mobile device cameras, Instagram, with its unique vintage-style of photography, rapidly attracted public attention. What’s more, Instagram provides a variety of filters to help users beautify their photos, plus the application contains the digital photographic editing functions, such as contrast, tilt shift, vignette and so on, these functions meet the most photography needs of peoples’ daily.
Instagram, love it or hate it, is a very strong force in photography right now. Part of that is due to its signature photo filters, but its easy social sharing features are also a large part of why the app is so popular. In December 2014, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom announced that Instagram has 300 million users accessing the site per month. And according to data in May 2012, 58 photographs were being uploaded and a new user was being gained each second. Although people enjoy the convenience and the feeling of showing their lives to others, Instagram actually brings depressing effects among people behind those fabulous pictures and those joyous moments.
The fabulous pictures that people post on Instagram provides gives others such a beautiful illusion world. For instance there are too many people boasting about their lavish lifestyle or luxury personal beings on Instagram, causing people to complain about their own lives. Unlike other social network services such as Facebook where someone can normally see information from his or her friends and people he or she choose, it is easily to see strangers’ postings on Instagram, which means photos posted on Instagram can be spread much more simply. Also, a photo is more directly to bring the images that boaster want to “broadcast” compare to words. Jessica Winter mentioned in her article, “You get more explicit and implicit cues of people being happy, rich, and successful from a photo than from a status update. A photo can very powerfully provoke immediate social comparison, and that can trigger feelings of inferiority” (Jessica Winter). Consequently, boasters are driven to display their wealth and lives and normal users are more like to have access to those showing-offs. In addition, the beautiful illusion world that Instagram gives will affects people who live in an ordinary routine or while they are doing something usual and not exciting at all. Therefore, because there are all kinds of gorgeous things on Instagram. As a result normal people usually find themselves inferior after sighted the illusion world. As Karley Sciortino mentioned in her article, “More than any other form of social media, Instagram seems specifically about comparison—an endless competition of whose life is better. How can one ever be truly satisfied when, right there in your phone, lies an endless stream of photographic evidence that tons of people are having more fun, and are more successful, wealthier, skinnier, and more in love than you are? It’s an instant insecurity inducer, evidenced by the fact that we all look at our own Instagram feeds even more than we look at other people’s” (Karley Sciortino). Thus, in contrast to the gorgeous world in Instagram, while people realize the views in the real world, they often find them depressing.
