Social media can do a lot of things, but do you think you could use it to survive?
There is a website called Craigslist which is like a town market kind of place on a website. You can search for things like available rooms to rent, general household items for sale or for free, and even for a job. There is even a relationship section where you can search for someone as a platonic friendship, a blind date for a Saturday night or post a ‘missed connection’ for that one person on the subway you just thought you had received a wink from. I myself have used this site to look for jobs, and found roommates on here both good and bad. It has a lot of perks, like if you happen to find some free items that are still good or if you can find a job offer on here or an apartment for rent that isn’t some kind of scam. However, there is a downside, like the story about the ‘Craigslist Killer’ a guy who would lure people out with his ads and then kill them. You know not everything online is safe and trustworthy even the news you read, so why would a person be? Still, Joseph Garner decided to try to see just how far he could get with this site.
Joe left his home in California with no money, the clothes on his back, a small backpack of basics like his toothbrush and a cameraman to go with him and document everything that happened. His intention was to try to live for a year only off of ads posted on the Craigslist website. He didn’t contact his friends or family for that entire year and needed to find small jobs, food, and places to stay from complete strangers. He also decided to try out the ‘rides for share’ section and see how far he could get across the country. I found this a very interesting concept and if you think so as well, and enjoy documentaries you should check it out.
