Locs come with several negative stereotypes. If you have the courage to wear them you will hear these same 4 sentences all the time:

1. “Locs are dirty.”
The myth that individuals with locs don’t wash their hair is exactly that. Don’t be so naive. If you see a person that has really gross looking locs…chances are if their hair wasn’t locked it would be dirty as well. Dirty people come in all forms.

2. “Everyone who has locs smokes weed.”
I can’t even explain how annoying it is to be approached by strangers randomly on a daily basis  attempting to sell me weed or asking me where to find some weed. That’s not very nice. It’s rude actually and really awkward.

3. “Women that have dreadlocks are lesbians.”
I do know a lot of lesbians with dreadlocks. But still…it’s not nice to make that assumption.

4. “Everyone who has locs is in the Dirty Backpacker crew.”
This is definitely not the case. I know individuals that have locs simply to make bold fashion statements. We all don’t hang out at your local spoken word club snapping our fingers.

Why do you think locs are frowned upon? I have noticed that Corporate America is beginning to be more accepting of women with locs. However, I can’t say men with locs are getting the same treatment.

I found that to be terrible that people in this day and age are still so narrow minded and stereotype people like that!

I agree. Stereotypes will always be around though. As time passes more and more people just learn to hold their tongue and keep their thoughts to themselves.

as they should and the saying goes if you have nothing nice to say do not say anything at all.

Great blog! I think corporate america has taken a long time accepting any hairstyle that isn’t straight. But as you said, its slowly changing. I’ve also found women have a little more freedom with our style bc we’re viewed as less intimidating.
