Early this morning I was digging something interesting to read for my travel and I came across this article – ‘Boy wants to stay on girl’s field hockey team’- A story about a 13 year old boy who was banned from playing hockey at his Long Island school for the girls’ team. Reason: ‘too skilled’ to play with girls.
The boy, Keeling Pilaro, who according to news reports played hockey growing up in Ireland and who has been playing the sport for two years as a member of the girls team is now fighting a legal battle with the help of 40 year old law ‘Title IX’ enacted to provide women equal access to athletic opportunities. Pilaro says he wants to play hockey doesn’t matter if it’s a girls team or a boy’s. But with minimal opportunity for boys in high school field hockey, this was his safe bet to horn his skills.
However the concerned authorities cited a provision in state education law that says administrators are permitted to bar boys from girls teams if a boy’s participation ‘would have significant adverse effect’ on a girl’s opportunity to participate in interschool competition in that sport.
In my opinion this is a classic case of reverse discrimination. On one hand we talk about equal rights and hail merit over everything and on the other you stop the boy from performing just because he is ‘too skilled’!!! I would even buy it if authorities said he was banned for his size or strength but skill! If women are allowed to compete in traditional male dominating sports like boxing, football or wrestle then why are men banned?
I am a feminist too but I strongly believe in fair play and merit. And if the case suggests like in this case authorities believe it will be unfair to other ‘skilled’ girls, then have them compete and then decide.
What is your take on this? Do you agree that the boy should be banned just because he is too skilled?
